We've seen a lot of things on filter changes - but this one made us stop and laugh. A Nerf dart and a little plastic figure, just hanging out inside the return vent. Somebody had a pretty good shot. We had to give credit where it's due.
The funny find aside, that filter tells the real story. Heavy dust buildup all the way across the surface is a sign the filter has been working overtime - and probably past the point where it can do its job properly. When a filter gets that clogged, airflow gets restricted and your system has to work harder just to keep up.
That extra strain shows up in a few ways. Higher energy use. Rooms that don't cool or heat evenly. And air that just doesn't feel as clean as it should. Most people don't think about their filters until something obvious goes wrong, but the buildup happens gradually and quietly.
Regular filter changes are one of the simplest things you can do to protect your system and keep your indoor air quality where it should be. It's not glamorous work, but it matters a lot more than most homeowners realize.
We check filters as part of every maintenance visit - and yes, we do occasionally find surprises along the way. If yours hasn't been looked at in a while, it's probably overdue.
