Low airflow is one of the most common complaints we hear. And honestly, the fix is often simpler than people expect. A neglected air filter is usually the first place we look - and most of the time, it's the culprit.
What happens when a filter goes too long without being changed is pretty straightforward. Debris builds up, airflow gets restricted, and that debris starts migrating onto the evaporator coil. Once the coil gets coated, your system has to work a lot harder just to do its job. That extra strain adds up fast - on your equipment and on your energy bill.
The evaporator coil is where the heat exchange actually happens inside your system. When it gets caked with dust and debris, it can't pull heat out of the air efficiently. We see coils in rough shape regularly, and in most cases it traces back to filters that were left in way too long.
A good rule of thumb is to swap your filter every 90 days. If you have pets or anyone in the home with allergies, even more frequently. It's a small habit that keeps your ducting and ventilation running the way they're supposed to - and it helps you avoid bigger, more expensive problems down the road.
Skipping filter changes might not seem like a big deal in the moment. But the wear it puts on your system over time is very real. If your AC isn't moving air the way it should, that's a sign worth paying attention to.
